Laptop Battery Maintenance

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on October 8, 2008 in: computers | Tags: , , , ,

My research shows that most readers of ThreadOfTheDay.com visit this site with a computer. Some of you may be using a laptop computer. Those that are using a laptop probably have a battery installed, but, like me, mostly use the computer while it’s plugged in.

Is this the best thing for the battery, or will removing the battery increase it’s life significantly? That is the subject in this thread in the forums of NotebookReview.com.

It makes me consider removing my battery, but I won’t. It’s just too convenient for me to leave it in.

How To Get To Sesame Street

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on October 7, 2008 in: television | Tags: , , , , ,

Sesame Street is now in it’s 39th year. In this thread at the MuppetCentral.com forum, adults are having a serious discussion on what they would like to see more of this season. I don’t think they are watching with their kids.

http://forum.muppetcentral.com/showthread.php?t=39629

Not surprisingly, because humans are nostalgic by nature, most posters want to see more of their favorite characters from the past.

I haven’t seen Sesame Street in years. I wonder if the Yip Yip aliens are still on it? They were my favorite.

Odd Names

The folks in the MuseumOfHoaxes.com forum discuss odd and funny names in this thread.

http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/forums/viewthread/219/

On this subject, my family doctor’s name is Dr. Klutz. He is a very good doctor, but I always imagine him in surgery accidentally snipping something he isn’t supposed to and then saying “oops, I’m such a klutz.”

David Blaine’s Dive of Death

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on October 5, 2008 in: television | Tags: , , , , , , ,

So who saw David Blaine’s most recent live stunt on ABC?

First he performed an amazing feat of endurance by hanging upside down in Central Park for 60 hours straight. Sure, he took breaks every 20 minutes or so any time he felt kind of tired,  but he still loitered non-stop in Central Park for 2.5 days. If you don’t count the homeless or Christo’s “The Gates”, not too many can make that claim.

After this incredible accomplishment, David Blaine then topped it off by frightening all nervous viewers with his dangerous “Dive of Death”. He stepped off his 40 foot perch and was slowly lowered by a cable to just a couple feet from the ground. Phew, what a close call!

Then, after hanging there for a minute, the cable raised him above the view of the camera and into the darkness. The announcer then proclaims David Blaine has vanished into thin air. This was a feat I haven’t seen matched since my days of playing peek-a-boo in my high chair.

For those who missed it, here is a video on YouTube.

Today’s Thread of The Day is at the DavidBlaine.com forum where fans discuss what went wrong with this trick. I don’t know what they are talking about. The trick seemed perfect to me. They also get into some weird fighting and name calling with each other which has nothing to do with David Blaine.

Maybe the “Dive of Death” is actually a literal metaphor for his career.

I learned from this thread that most people, when making eye contact, only look at one eye.

When A Good Woot Goes Bad

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on October 3, 2008 in: retail | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Woot.com is a whimsical deal-a-day website. Every day, they sell only one product. At midnight, they move on to the next item. The majority of the products are electronics, but they can be anything. I have seen pens, pistachios, vacuum cleaners, wine, 65 inch tvs. Whatever the item, it is always a great deal and shipping is a flat $5 no matter how big or small the product.

Most days I pass on whatever they are selling, but still go back every day to read the write up of today’s product. They are always hilarious. Their writers are brilliant.

I have bought a few items there and have been very satisfied with my purchases. Recently, Woot was offering a nice looking Breville 800ESXL espresso machine. Williams-Sonoma and Bed Bath & Beyond sell it for $400. It gets good reviews on Amazon.com where the best price is $380. Woot’s price was only $150 so I jumped on it.

The reason I bring this up here on ThreadOfTheDay.com is because each product does have it’s own forum thread. This is only the second time I have highlighted a forum I participate in. The first was “Isla Mujeres Dolphin Rescue“.

It turns out this great deal is turning out to be a bust. Many of the espresso machines are being reported as defective, including mine. Lots of them have a weird problem where the internal pump continuously directs water to the excess water tray that sits under your coffee cup on the machine, completely bypassing your coffee grounds. This has caused quite a few flooded kitchen counters as the pump can kick on even when the power is off.

Here is a link to the thread. Since it is a long one, I skipped ahead to when people’s machines begin arriving and they report the condition of their espresso makers.  There is a very high percentage of members with defects. What a mess.

Despite this hiccup, I will probably continue to use woot.com. I am sure they will get this straightened out somehow. Also Breville seems like a good company and have promised new machines to those who called them, including myself. I hope everything works out. Stay tuned.

Faking a Pregnancy?

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on October 2, 2008 in: Pregnancy | Tags: , , , , ,

Over at ThePregnancyForum.com boards, a woman is concerned that her friend may be faking her pregnancy.

http://www.thepregnancyforum.com/general-discussion/14449-am-i-over-reacting.html

At the time of the original forum post, her friend was due in about six weeks and was showing no signs of a baby bump. Coincidentally, the future mommy and the would-be-daddy were not married until after she announced this pregnancy.

The due date was September 15. On the 22nd, the forum is updated that she still has not had the baby. Supposedly, the doctor said she was dilated, but sent her home. As of today, everybody is waiting to hear what happened. Hopefully the original poster updates them soon.

Putting Lucky The Dog To Sleep

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on October 1, 2008 in: animals | Tags: , , , , ,

Today’s Thread of the Day is an emotional one.

http://www.dogforums.com/2-general-dog-forum/36766-will-wednesday-12-30-a.html

A woman at dogforums.com has to go through the pain of putting her long time friend Lucky the dog to sleep today at 12:30. Lucky has been at her side for 18 years, since she was in the fourth grade. The other forum members do their best to comfort her.

So sad, but I’m sure Lucky will be in a better place now.
