Boycott Women

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 30, 2008 in: boycott | Tags: , , , , , , ,

HipForums.com have a section in their forum dedicated for boycotting companies, organizations, countries due to consumer and human rights violations.

There you can see typical pleas to boycott McDonalds, Wal-Mart, plastic bags, products made in China, etc.

Apparently they are running out of things to boycott. One members suggests that we boycott women based on the actions of one, Sue Basso.

One lucky bird watcher from Turkey (the country, not the bird) got a photo of this Spur-winged Plover.

Wal-Mart Employee Killed By Black Friday Stampede

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 28, 2008 in: retail | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Early this morning, a Long Island Wal-Mart employee was crushed to death by an overanxious crowd of Black Friday shoppers. Apparently the crowd grew so large, the doors could no longer contain them. When the doors broke off their hinges, the crowd poured in like water through a broken dam. Unfortunately, the worker was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In today’s thread, the members of gottadeal.com discuss this tragic event:

http://forums.gottadeal.com/showthread.php?t=128223

Human stampede deaths are something you expect to hear about in third world countries, not “civilized” countries like ours.

I looked at all the major store ads for Black Friday, including Wal-Mart, and can’t figure out what the big deal is. There were a few decent bargains, but nothing spectacular that I would call a “doorbuster”.

Think Positive Detroit Lions Fans

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 27, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

As I write this, the Detroit Lions record is 0-11. Right now they are playing the Tennessee Titans and losing 47-10 in the fourth quarter. Assuming they lose this game, they will have lost 20 of their last 21 games, going back to last year. Some say this is the worst team in history.

Detroit fans were in danger of being blacked out from watching today’s traditional Thanksgiving game because it wasn’t a sellout. An extension by the NFL allowed the Lions to barely sell out the game in time.

Through all this, the Lions fans in the forums of LionBacker.com have a thread to talk about all the positives of this team.

Good luck, not an easy thing to do. The best they can come up with is their kicker, Jason Hanson, is playing well.

School Bus Humor

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 26, 2008 in: education | Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

Negative school bus incidents are constantly in the news these days. Tension between fed up drivers and unruly kids is a ticking time bomb. Parents are crazy for even allowing their kids to ride the bus. At least that’s what the media seems to want us to believe.

I don’t think this is reality, though. Sure, there are occasional, isolated incidents, but most bus drivers and their student passengers have a great rapport with each other. Many drivers consider the kids part of their extended family.

Anyways, in this thread at SchoolBusFleet.com, the school bus drivers share funny things their students have said.

http://www.schoolbusfleet.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14768

P.S.

This post is dedicated to a very special school bus driver in Kutztown, PA. I can imagine her telling any number of stories like the ones in this thread, and it brings a smile to my face. We haven’t spoken in a few years, but I think of her often.

Countdown to 24:Redemption

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 23, 2008 in: television | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

The tv show “24″ hasn’t been on the air for a while. Last year it was a victim of the writers’ strike. So it hasn’t been on for almost two years. The next season doesn’t officially start until January.

So what has Jack Bauer been doing during this time? Tonight we will find out as Fox airs a special 24 hour movie, called “24:Redemption”, that bridges the long gap between seasons.

The 24 fans over at the forum on fox.com can hardly contain their excitement. They started a countdown a month ago and now, with only minutes remaining, this thread is buzzing:

http://forums.fox.com/fox24/messages/?msg=135254.1

If you missed 24:Redemption, you can watch it instantly on your computer through amazon.com with this link:

Mold & Termites Under Wallpaper

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 22, 2008 in: home improvement | Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

Over at PaintTalk.com, a forum member starts a thread on how a simple job turned not so simple. He just had to take off wallpaper and then paint the walls. Unfortunately, behind the wallpaper was mold and a ten year infestation of termites. He describes the walls as being like Swiss cheese and being able to poke your finger through it. This small job just turned expensive.

http://www.painttalk.com/showthread.php?t=3648

What amazes me about this thread is that it turns into a stupid, name calling, flame war. How can a non-controversial subject like house painting turn into this, while yesterday’s Thread Of The Day truly was controversial and yet remained civil?

Could Jesus Be Satan?

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 21, 2008 in: religion | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Never get into a debate about religion. It is an argument that nobody can win. One side will not convince the other. Feelings may be hurt. It’s one way to anger people and make enemies.

Yet, here is a forum, DebatingChristianity.com, who’s sole purpose is for all sides to debate Christianity. Amazingly, they seem to do so in a civil and thought provoking manner.

In this thread, the poster presents the argument that it may be possible Jesus was actually Satan in disguise.

http://debatingchristianity.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9313

I certainly don’t believe Satan was Jesus, but this thread is intriguing and philosophical. Kudos to the members of this website for being able to have such (mostly) civil, intelligent debates.

Bookworms Dating Non-Readers

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 20, 2008 in: books | Tags: , , , , , , ,

The book lovers in OnlineBookClub.org discuss if they could get romantically involved with somebody who does not read books:

http://forums.onlinebookclub.org/viewtopic.php?t=118

Many say no, conversations would be too limited for their taste.

I wonder what Oprah’s book club would say? Does Steadman read books?
