ESPN Fixes Games

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on January 7, 2009 in: sports | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

On ESPN.com there is an entertaining contest called Streak for the Cash. Everyday, ESPN post a few different sports matchups. You have the choice of picking the winner for which ever games you want. If you correctly pick 27 times in a row, you win a million dollars.

Of course the games they let you choose from are not usually easy picks, so it’s difficult to put a long streak together. My current winning streak is two. The highest right now is 12.

In today’s Thread of the Day, there is a genius who insists ESPN is fixing the games that are broadcast on their network. This includes tennis, soccer, basketball, football, etc., college and professional. ESPN is doing this to keep players from putting a long streak together. He even has “proof”. The teams that the majority pick are losing too much. He is absolutely convinced and nobody can change his mind.

As one member stated: “this has to be the dumbest thread I’ve seen on this message board in quite some time.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Think Positive Detroit Lions Fans

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 27, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

As I write this, the Detroit Lions record is 0-11. Right now they are playing the Tennessee Titans and losing 47-10 in the fourth quarter. Assuming they lose this game, they will have lost 20 of their last 21 games, going back to last year. Some say this is the worst team in history.

Detroit fans were in danger of being blacked out from watching today’s traditional Thanksgiving game because it wasn’t a sellout. An extension by the NFL allowed the Lions to barely sell out the game in time.

Through all this, the Lions fans in the forums of LionBacker.com have a thread to talk about all the positives of this team.

Good luck, not an easy thing to do. The best they can come up with is their kicker, Jason Hanson, is playing well.

After Ski Activities

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on November 2, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

It’s now November and ski season is getting started. What do the members of a ski forum like to do after skiing? That is the question at talkski.com.

http://www.talkski.com/ski-forum/showthread.php?t=146

Not suprisingly, drinking shows up in more than one response.

I like drinking occasionally, and I enjoy eating, and hot tubs are nice. However, I don’t think I would like to eat and drink while in a hot tub like one skier does after a day on the slopes.

Hockey Game Breaks Out At Fight

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on October 14, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , , , , ,

There is a popular website where the topic is nothing but hockey fights. It is called, what else, HockeyFights.com. They actually keep very detailed stats.

In the forums, they discuss fights as they happen, comment on them, and declare a winner.

Right now, the Philadelphia Flyers are playing the Pittsburgh Penguins. There was a fight between the Flyers’ Riley Cote and the Penguins’ Eric Godard. Just moments after the fight finished, this thread lit up with dozens of excited fight fans.

http://www.hockeyfights.com/forums/f9/philadelphia-pittsburgh-10-14-08-a-106363/

Even though the hockey season just started, many fans are calling it the fight of the year. Some called it a draw while others say Eric Godard was the winner. I give the slight edge to Godard.

Does anybody from HockeyFights.com care who wins the game, or is it just the fights that matter?

Skydivers Vs. Neighbor McNasty

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on September 22, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , , , , , ,

A skydiver at the DropZone.com forum brings up an interesting legal question. He has jumped at a drop zone that has an unfriendly neighbor, aka Neighbor McNasty.

Occasionally, an errant parachutist may land on this man’s property, or even just close by then cross the property line while running out their landing. The neighbor got fed up with this and has erected a menacing fence. One with solid steel poles and topped with barbed wire.

Surely, Neighbor McNasty knows the barbed wire could seriously injure a skydiver. Is he legally liable if that happens, or is it a completely reasonable way to keep out trespassers.

I believe, legally, this property owner has just as much right to use barbed wire as anybody else. It is not his fault if a skydiver lands on it. They are the ones assuming the risk in this risky activity. However, morally, it may be wrong. A solid fence without barbed wire is adequate.

So, I am undecided on this issue. I guess you could say I’m on the fence.

Pittsburgh Penguins Special Delivery

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on September 11, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Today’s thread is at a hockey fan forum in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ section:

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=548732

The Penguins have recently started a tradition where a few lucky season ticket holders get their tickets delivered by a player. In this forum, a member announced last week that he got a call from the Penguins asking him to be home the following week, which was yesterday, at a certain time to get his special delivery from a player.

They don’t tell him which one, so the speculation begins. Will it be a superstar like Sydney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, or Marc-Andre Fleury? The anticipation begins.

It ended up not being a well known player, Jeff Taffe, but as one poster said, it was better than the mailman.

Oh No Ocho Cinco

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on September 4, 2008 in: Football, sports | Tags: , , , , ,

Today is the opening kickoff to the new NFL season. So today’s thread of the day takes us to a football forum where Bengal fans discuss this latest piece of news.

At first I thought this was a joke, but unfortunately it is not. The Cincinatti Bengals’ Chad Johnson has legally changed his name to Chad Ocho Cinco. Ocho Cinco means “eight five” in Spanish which is his jersey number. The “Johnson” on his uniform will now be replaced with “Ocho Cinco”.

He should have went with the more technically correct “Ochenta y Cinco” which is “Eighty Five” in Spanish. I guess it doesn’t have the same ring to it.  Oh well, the important thing is I’m sure he will sell millions of jerseys now.

Here’s what Bengal fans are saying about it:

Fat Goalie

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on May 4, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , , , , , , ,

The NHL playoffs are in full force right now and the hockey fans at HFBoards.com have much to talk about in their busy forum.

Goaltending is obviously an important issue, but this thread is a little less serious. They discuss if an extremely obese person would make a good goalie. He could just sit in front of the goal and it would be impossible for the puck to get by.

Sounds good in theory, but would it work? Find out in today’s Thread Of The Day.

Sportsmanship At It’s Best

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on May 1, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , , , , , , ,

You may have already heard about this nice story. It has been in many news outlets.

Sara Tucholsky, a senior softball player for Western Oregon, hits a home run. It is the first one in her career.  While rounding first base, she blows her knee out. She is unable to continue.

If anybody from her team’s bench touches her, she is out. She can stay at first base and get a pinch runner, but then it is only a single and not a home run.

As the coach is getting ready to call a substitute, two players from the other team, Central Washington, offer to help. There are no rules on the book against the opposing team actually helping the runner. So Mallory Holtman and Liz Wallace carried the injured opponent around the bases, stopping at each on so she could touch them with her good leg.

The good samaritans’ team loses what is a very important game in the battle for their conference title and their season ends.

The members of the UltimateCollegeSoftball.com forum started discussing this amazing act before it became such a big story around the country.

Here is the thread.

Alcohol And Golf

Written by ThreadOfTheDay.com on April 21, 2008 in: sports | Tags: , ,

Does drinking help you play golf better?

Some of the members in this thread at thesandrap.com forum think a little alcohol can relax you, and that helps you golf better.

http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9805

I think the drinks only make you feel you are playing better.  If you do play better, than you probably weren’t a good golfer to begin with.

I wonder what John Daly’s opinion is on this.
